Starch Ethers

Starch Ether is a non - ionized starch, also known as starch ether, made from epoxy propane and starch under alkaline condition through etherification. It can give special work performance to cement based and plaster based products. It has similar structure and functions of Methylhydroxyethylcellulose, also good compatibility with other construction additives. Applying with Methylhydroxyethylcellulose, a better thickening effect, crack resistance and workability can be achieved. The cost of mortar can be reduced by adding Starch Ether into the formulation.

Thickening and anti-sagging

  • Significantly improves the anti-sagging and rheological properties of mortar, especially for mechanically sprayed high flow mortar (e.g. gypsum-based mortar).
  • Increases the yield value of the mortar by adsorbing positively charged cement particles to form a mesh structure, enhancing slip resistance and making it suitable for large-size tile laying

Improve water retention and open time

  • Reduces water evaporation, improves mortar workability and extends open time to meet the 30-minute open demand of specialty tile adhesives (e.g., Grade E).
  • Further improves water retention and smoothness of workability in conjunction with methyl cellulose ether

Construction performance optimization

  • Enhance the ease of mixing and applying the mortar, and reduce the construction resistance.
  • Improve surface smoothness and enhance the decorative effect of gypsum-based or cement mortar

The main role of starch ether in dry mortar

1、Water retention and thickening effect
Improve construction operability by enhancing mortar water retention, reducing water loss, extending open time
Increase the consistency of mortar, optimise the ease of use.
2、Improve construction performance
Enhance the anti-sagging property, suitable for vertical wall construction, reduce the phenomenon of mortar sagging;
Improve the lubricity of mortar, make the application more slippery, reduce the viscosity of mortar.
3、Anti-sagging ability
Prevent mortar sagging in thick layer construction, guarantee construction quality.
4、Synergistic efficiency
Compound with cellulose ether, complementary performance: cellulose ether focuses on water retention, starch ether focuses on thickening and anti-sagging, comprehensively improve the anti-sagging mortar and construction efficiency.

How are starch ethers produced?

Starch ether is a modified starch formed by chemical modification of starch.

I. Basic raw materials

  1. Natural starch
Commonly used natural starches include corn starch, tapioca starch, potato starch.

II,Etherizing agent

  1. Hydroxypropyl starch ether
Using propylene oxide as an etherifying agent, the hydroxypropyl group is introduced by reacting with the hydroxyl group of the starch molecule1.
  2. Hydroxyethyl starch ether
Modification of starch molecule is realized by hydroxyethylation reaction, and specific hydroxyethylation reagents (such as ethylene oxide compounds) are required.
  3. Carboxymethyl starch ether
Sodium chloroacetate is usually used as an etherifying agent to produce carboxymethyl-substituted starch derivatives.

III. Catalysts

Basic catalysts (e.g., sodium hydroxide) are used to regulate the pH of the reaction system and promote the etherification reaction to proceed
