Knauf Gips Romania to commission Huedin gypsum wallboard plant in 2027

by in Industrial News July 6, 2026

Knauf Gips Romania is progressing with the construction of a new plasterboard plant in Huedin, Cluj County, with works now reaching several key logistical milestones, according to a company press release.

The project, a strategic investment worth EUR 88 million, is one of the largest recent developments in the construction materials industry in Eastern Europe. The investment value has increased from an initial estimate of EUR 76 million announced in 2022. According to the execution schedule, the unit’s foundation has been completed, the resistance structure is 65 percent finished, and roof installation is under way. The factory is expected to become operational by the end of 2027.

The new production unit will have an annual capacity of 30 million square metres of plasterboard, serving the residential, commercial and industrial segments. The factory will process raw material extracted from the Leghia-Dumbrava gypsum quarries, located around 15 kilometres away.

According to the company, domestic production will optimise the supply chain by reducing transport distances and delivery times for both the Romanian market and neighbouring countries.

“The investment in Huedin is an important step in Knauf’s development in Romania. The new factory will allow us to respond better to the growing demand for modern construction materials and, at the same time, to contribute to the economic development of the local community. Beyond figures and production capacities, this investment speaks about trust: in the potential of the market, in our partners, but also in the people of this region. We want to create jobs, bring high-performance technologies to Romania and support the sustainable development of the construction industry,” said Mihai Marinescu, General Manager of Knauf Gips Romania.

The industrial project will directly generate around 80 jobs and create additional commercial opportunities for local suppliers, transport companies and service providers in the region.

Knauf Gips Romania is part of the German Knauf Group, one of the world’s largest construction materials producers, which operates locally through Knauf Gips Romania and Knauf Insulation. Knauf Gips Romania already runs a factory in Aghireșu, Cluj County, where it produces dry mixes, plasters and gypsum-based finishing products used for interior wall finishing and plasterboard surfaces.

Meanwhile, Knauf Insulation operates a production facility in Târnăveni, Mureș County, where it manufactures glass mineral wool. The plant, built following an investment of over EUR 140 million, started production in January 2025 after construction began in 2023.

From a sustainability perspective, the new Huedin factory’s infrastructure will integrate energy-efficiency solutions, including photovoltaic panels, aimed at reducing its carbon footprint and optimising resource consumption in the production process.
